Ask Tria

You don’t need to know Markdown to change the rules. Tell Tria what you want in one sentence, the way you’d say it to a person, and it shows you how TRIA.md would look before saving anything.

Tria only changes the rules and, if needed, creates folders. It never renames, moves or deletes anything you already have.

In the app

In Rules (⌘4), type in “Tell Tria what to change” and click “Ask”. Below it there are examples that fill in the field without sending it:

  • “Electricity bills go in Utilities”
  • “Taxi receipts go with the invoices received”
  • “Don’t touch the 8-Certificates folder”

While it thinks, you’ll see “Tria is working out the change…”. Then a card appears with a summary and the change highlighted: what goes out in red and what comes in in green, with a “The folder … will be created” line for each new folder. Click “Apply” or “Discard”. If there are documents already read in the inbox, the card warns you that Tria will read them again.

In the CLI

bash
tria rules ask "electricity bills go in Utilities"tria rules ask "don't touch the 8-Certificates folder" -y# applies without asking

Tria tells you first how much it will cost, shows the change in color and asks “[a] apply · [d] discard”. With -y it applies it without asking. If Tria doesn’t make the change, it explains why and exits with 1.

What it can and can’t do

Tria can change whichever sections of TRIA.md it needs to, add a new one, change in the header whether it can create folders and which ones it doesn’t touch, and create the folders the change needs. What it can’t do:

  • Rename or move what already exists. It replies: “That’s done in the Finder; then tell me what it’s called and I’ll update the rules”.
  • Change the inbox or the duplicates folder. Those folders stay as they are.
  • Anything that isn’t a rule. If the request has nothing to do with sorting, it tells you why it won’t do it.

Before showing you the change, Tria checks that TRIA.md will still be valid. If not, it says “I can’t make that change” and why, and doesn’t touch anything. If someone changes TRIA.md between your request and applying it, Tria discards the change: “TRIA.md has changed since you asked. Ask again.”

When you apply it, the previous version is saved in .tria/rules-history/.

Suggestions from your corrections

When you file a document in a different folder or under a different name from the one Tria proposed, it suggests a rule so it gets it right next time.

  • In the app you’ll see the “Tria suggests a rule · View” notice and a number next to Rules. Each suggestion says where it comes from, the rule and the section it would go in, with “Add” and “Discard”. The same correction won’t ask you for two rules.
  • In the CLI, after applying, tria sort asks whether to add it; whatever you leave for later you’ll find with tria rules suggestions.

What’s sent and what it costs

A request sends your sentence, TRIA.md, the folder list and PERFIL.md; no documents. A suggestion also sends the excerpt of the document you corrected.

With your key, it spends a little of it. With Tria AI, it doesn’t come off your document balance: it works during the trial and once the app is unlocked, with a daily request limit.
